Manga (漫画) is the Japanese word for comics, but outside Japan it specifically refers to comics produced in Japan or in the Japanese style. With billions of volumes sold annually and a global readership spanning every continent, manga is one of the most influential storytelling mediums in the world.
How Manga is Published
Most manga series start life in serialized form, printed in anthology magazines like Weekly Shonen Jump or Monthly Big Comic Spirits. Individual chapters — typically 15–20 pages — are released weekly or monthly. Once enough chapters accumulate, they are collected and reprinted as standalone volumes called tankōbon (単行本), the format most readers outside Japan encounter.
Reading Direction
Manga is read right to left, top to bottom — the opposite of Western comics. Panels on the right side of the page come before panels on the left, and within a panel, speech bubbles follow the same direction. Most officially translated editions preserve this format; early localized editions that mirrored pages to read left-to-right are now considered collector’s oddities.
Black and White vs. Color
The vast majority of manga is published in black and white. This is a direct result of the serialization model: producing weekly chapters in full color would be economically and logistically prohibitive. Color pages do appear — usually on chapter covers or special editions — and some digital-first titles publish in full color, but monochrome art remains the defining visual standard.
Manga Demographics
Japanese publishers categorize manga not by genre but by target audience:
| Demographic | Target Audience | Example Series |
|---|---|---|
| Shonen | Young male readers | One Piece, Naruto, Demon Slayer |
| Shojo | Young female readers | Sailor Moon, Fruits Basket |
| Seinen | Adult male readers | Berserk, Vagabond, Chainsaw Man |
| Josei | Adult female readers | Nana, Honey and Clover |
| Kodomomuke | Children | Doraemon, Pokémon |
Global Influence
Manga has shaped animation (anime is almost always adapted from manga), film, video games, and fashion worldwide. Not sure how manga differs from manhwa or manhua? Our full comparison guide covers all three. Markets in France, the United States, and across Southeast Asia rival Japan in per-capita readership. Publishers like Kodansha, Shueisha, and Shogakukan generate billions of dollars annually, while international platforms like Manga Plus have made simultaneous global chapter releases standard practice.
