Synopsis
After a war, Anna keeps her village afloat through a restaurant that has become a refuge for people in need. When Bertram, a wandering laborer, arrives, she assigns him to kitchen work, where his onion-cutting proves unusually tearless. He claims he owes a debt to her late father. Deprived of emotion, Bertram nonetheless responds to Anna's compassion as danger gathers around their home.
