Synopsis

In 1711, alchemists aboard a ship summon a demon and receive an elixir that halts aging, along with a grim rule for ending their lives: one immortal must consume another. When one of them turns on the group, the survivors abandon one another and disappear into different eras and countries. By 1930s America, Prohibition has created a battlefield for criminals and investigators. A federal agent struggles to contain organized crime while pursuing a terrorist and an audacious pair of thieves, as violence erupts aboard a transcontinental train. Decades later, a handful of the alchemists search for those still missing, unaware that their reunion may draw an unexpected figure from the past. These investigations, journeys, and secrets connect events spanning an eighteenth-century town, Depression-era America, and a voyage across the Pacific.
